Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show
“Nostalgia” Show Garden
A full show garden built to competition standard at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, awarded Show Gold and the Mark Bence Construction Award for best construction. Roughly eleven months of planning went into a garden that had to be set out, built and finished in nine days on the tools.

Client objectives
- Build to award-winning construction tolerances on a fixed nine-day program
- Deliver a mid-century garden that reads as a real, lived-in home landscape
- Coordinate designers, decorators and trades across a single compressed build
Scope of works
- Set-out and levels across the full show site
- Rendered feature walls, screens and pavilion structure
- Terrazzo-style paving, circular steppers and exposed aggregate steps
- Structural garden beds, mass planting and lawn
- Feature detailing, styling and final finishes
Materials used
- Rendered blockwork and painted feature walls
- Terrazzo-look paving and circular concrete steppers
- Exposed aggregate steps and thresholds
- Perennial and grass-heavy planting palette
- Instant lawn
Challenges
Every element had to be built to judging tolerances in nine days, with no room to rework anything once planting began.
Solutions
Detailed pre-planning, staged material deliveries and a disciplined build sequence meant hard landscaping was finished ahead of planting, which is where the construction award was won.
